Viance, a wood-treatment company jointly owned by Chemical Specialties and Rohm and Haas, and based in Charlotte, North Carolina, now offers Ecolife pressure-treated wood products. Ecolife contains a waterborne wood preservative made from tebuconazole and imidacloprid (low-toxicity biocides commonly used in agriculture) instead of the industry-standard copper-based preservatives.

Part of an industry-wide trend toward organic, or nonmetallic, preservatives, Ecolife takes a similar approach to, and will compete against, Wolmanized L3 Outdoor Wood from Arch Treatment Technologies. Ecolife’s preservative is combined with a stabilizer that helps wood retain moisture to prevent cracking, splintering, and warping. These wood products are appropriate for aboveground applications such as residential decking, railings, stair treads, fence boards, siding, and fascia and are backed by a limited lifetime warranty. Ecolife is not corrosive to metal fasteners and, unlike copper-treated wood, can be painted or stained.
It is available untinted or with an added light-green dye—which can differentiate treated wood from untreated, helping ensure safe handling and disposal.
